Blackberrying

I just whiled away an hour of a pleasant evening gathering a tubful of blackberries. About a kilo, and there's plenty more where they came from. Very abundant, fat and juicy. Something likes all the recent rain!

What amazes me year after year is that there's all this top-notch food available for free and hardly anybody takes advantage of it. More fool them, I say!

Ah yes, but the more you pick the more they keep coming, and blackberries come thick and fast, so there's plenty to go round.

If others don't pick them quickly enough, you end up with a lot of squishy, overripe ones on the brambles and they make a right mess of your hands apart from not being suitable for cooking with (you have to eat them there and then!)

Yes, I did this yesterday and at the weekend and am just about to make a rosehip cordial.

I also picked elderberries and will be making an elderberry, blackberry and wild apple crumble.

I am making blackberry juice too.

and I only paid 23p for the custard!

The blackberries never last long enough for me to do that.

What I will do is fill a preserving jar with them and top it up with some sugar and a bottle of rum. It should be lovely just about Christmas.

I didn't see an cheap cherries this year unfortunately.
