  1. I'm feeling rather sorry for a man I know
The world he holds in trembling hands is asking where to go
As he stares out at me from the mirrored wall
I see that he is trying to cry, but the tears they will not fall
His life is passing by behind his tired eyes
Like the colours in the January skies
    Lindisfarne: January Song

  2. Well she's my woman of gold and she's not very old
T-Rex: Hot Love correctly identified by [livejournal.com profile] molekilby
Nice song, but one of the most vacuous lyrics in a field of vacuosity!

  3. Virgil Kane is my name and I drove on the Danville train
'Til so much cavalry came and they tore up the tracks again
Joan Baez: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, correctly identified by [livejournal.com profile] tvor
Joan changed the lyric around, not just in the first line. Robbie Robertson, whose song it is, wrote 'Stoneman's cavalry'. Just thought you'd like to know. This song was constantly being played on the juke box in the Union bar at Liverpool - it wasn't you putting it on, was it, [livejournal.com profile] cereswunderkind?

  4. You could say I lost my faith in science and progress
You could say I lost my belief in the holy church
You could say I lost my sense of direction
You could say all of this and worse, but
If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do
Sting: If I Ever Lose My Faith In You Nice one, [livejournal.com profile] abrokenstarr

  5. I'm not one to look behind, I know that times must change
But over there in Barrytown they do things very strange
    Though you're not my enemy
I like things like they used to be
And though you'd like some company
    I'm standing by myself
    Go play with someone else
I can see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown
    Steely Dan: Barrytown

  6. You're the kind of person you meet at certain dismal dull affairs
Centre of a crowd, talking much too loud, running up and down the stairs
Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years
And though you've tried you just cant hide your eyes are edged with tears.
    You better stop
    Look around
    Here it comes
The Rolling Stones: 19th Nervous Breakdown
It's a classic, innit? I'm really surprised nobody got this! Although Mr Jagger's diction was never his strongest suit

  7. Feel free to comprehend what I see will never end
What I see will never end
It can't be now that life is gone
    Its too real to overcome
    Anathema: Harmonium
Not sure how this got into my collection - off the iPod of a young friend I expect.

  8. I hear the seven deadly sins and the terrible twins came to call on you
The bigger they are, babe, the harder they fall on you
And you you're always the same, you persevere
On the same old pleasure ground
And it never rains around here
    It just comes pouring down
    Dire Straits: It Never Rains

  9. Asked my girl what she wanted to be
She said baby, can't you see
I want to be be famous, a star on the screen
But you can do something in between
The Beatles: Drive My Car Well done, [livejournal.com profile] wyldetwo

  10. Well I wish I was a catfish swimming in a deep blue sea
I would have all you good looking women fishing, fishing after me
Muddy Waters: Catfish Blues Tricky one, I expect, though it's been covered by just about every bluesman ever since

  11. What did I do wrong? Oh you nearly drove me cuckoo
Am I really all that bad? You're worse than Hannibal Lecter, Charlie Manson, Freddie Krueger
Why are we still together? Oh I can't leave until you're dead
You mean 'til death do us part? I mean like cyanide, strangulation or an axe to your head
It was lucky for us I turned the radio on
They say that music soothes the savage beast
There was something in that voice that stopped us seeing red
The two of us would surely have ended up dead
Catatonia: The Ballad of Tom Jones This version is Catatonia, I checked. Wonderful lyric! I'll still let you have it, [livejournal.com profile] novemberbug, for teaching me something I didn't know!

  12. The language of love slips from my lover's tongue
Cooler than ice cream and warmer than the sun
Dumb hearts get broken just like china cups
The language of love has left me broken on the rocks
But there's just one thing. just one thing,
But there's just one thing snd I really want to know
Who's that girl running around with you?
Eurythmics: Who's That Girl? Well done [livejournal.com profile] tvor

  13. All God's children need travelling shoes
    Drive your problems from here
All good people read good books
    Now your conscience is clear
I hear you talk girl, now your conscience is clear
Tanita Tikaram: Twist In My Sobriety
Late-night instrospection, a 1980s fad that seemed to fade fast.

  14. When your mother sends back all your invitations
And your father to your sister he explains
That you're tired of yourself and all of your creations
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
    Bob Dylan: Queen Jane Approximately

  15. I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad
Cream: I'm So Glad. So bleedin' obvious I was tempted to skip it,. but a point for [livejournal.com profile] wyldetwo all the same. A much better song than you might think!

  16. Mary's on the black top
There's a husband in the dog house
In the middle of a shakedown
She got quiet as a church mouse
She found Raleighs on the dashboard
    Sugar daddy caught a polocar
Ain't no solitary tap dance way down here
I swear I's riding on a field mouse
Tom Waits: Blow Wind Blow I'd have been tempted to guess at something by Bruce Springsteen! I love Tom Waits and I'm eternally grateful to [livejournal.com profile] naturalbornkaos for introducing me ten years ago or so.

  17. My lovely woman child, I found you out running wild with someone new
I found you out running wild with someone new
You've been untrue, and everybody knows we're through
But I can't say goodbye to you, no matter what you do
My heart wont let you go, although I know you go with someone new
    I think of you
    Roy Orbison: Goodnight

  18. Dying flame, you're free again
Who could love and do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be coming back
Save your tears, you've got years and years
Elkie Brooks: Fool If You Think It's Over Well done [livejournal.com profile] trixiedelarue

  19. I found my own true love once on a blue Sunday.
She looked at me and told me I was the only one in the world.
Now I have found my girl.
My girl awaits for me in tender times
The Doors: Blue Sunday It wouldn't be my liost without a Doors track

  20. Declare this an emergency
Come on and spread a sense of urgency
And pull us through, and pull us through
And this is the end, this is the end of the world
Muse: Apocalypse Please Much kudos to may young friends and my daughter for converting me to this excellent and genuinely original contemporary band.
