Today's picture is of The Hoad, the monument-on-a-hill which dominates the town of Ulverton. Strictly speaking, the hill is Hoad Hill and the tower, a replica of the original Eddystone Lighthouse, is the Sir John Barrow Memorial. Together they are usually called The Hoad, and The Hoad defines Ulverston as surely as the Eiffel Tower defines Paris.

Ulverston is Barrow's prim maiden aunt, rather chichi and a bit sniffy about the poor relation down the A590!
