Another world

I caught the bus to Ulverston today. Although it's only eight miles to the north that's eight miles closer to the Lake District, and apart from its undeniable northern-ness it might be a different world. Where Barrow is post-industrial, Ulverston is an agricultural market down. Where Barrow proper (as opposed to Walney, which seems to be thriving) is run-down and depressed, Ulverston oozes prosperity. It also has better food shops, which is why I went. It has better shops all round, most of them independents. There are few standards chains to be seen.
There are more pictures of Ulverston on this sunny market day here.
