Three years ago I visited the place of the birch trees - Brzezinka - near the industrial town of Oświęcim in southern Poland. So what, you might say. Until you hear the German version of those names. Under Nazi occupation, Brzezinka became Birkenau, and Oświęcim became Auschwitz.

Naturally IK took some pictures. Only black and white, I felt, would do justice to the place. I shot it on 400 ASA Fomapan - film of Czech manufacture available cheaply in Poland - and developed them shortly after I came home. It's taken me three years to get them printed, partly because of the emotional power of the images, but now it has been done. You can see more here

Life can never be quite the same after visiting Auschwitz.
