On the horns of a dilemma

I could go and play bridge tonight.

If I did that I'd meet people and talk to them, and generally be distracted, and that would be a Good Thing.

On the other hand, with my self-confidence very low, it's likely that I would play badly, and that would further undermine my self-confidence and could leave me feeling even worse. That would be a Bad Thing.

I could stay in on my own, and cry, and get drunk, and feel sorry for myself. That would be gratifying but, I suspect, a Bad Idea.

I can't decide what to do. Advice, please, Agony Aunties (and Uncles)

Go and play bridge, and trust that going out will boost your mood enough to play a decent game or two. If that goes well, then you can treat yourself to a pint of something nice in the pub afterwards.

Hope you feel better soon!

Are you able to open up to the Bridge People, tell them that you've had a rubbish few days but you looked forward to coming out to see them - people would respond to that well, I'm sure. Then you are covered if you play badly, and will get kudos if you play well. I don't know what your relationship with them is like but, if it helps, I've found that my struggle to be more open with people has reaped dividends, and I'm now all for saying it how it is rather than trying to hide depression, anxiety etc. Not saying you have trouble being open... oh, you know what I mean, go and play though, deffo!

Definitely, go! Staying on your own is probably more detrimental than going even if you do end up playing badly. The poster before me has some very good points. and you might enjoy yourself more than you think!

Yes, go! You never know what exciting thing will happen if you go out. You do know what will happen if you stay at home!
